About Us

The Bowen Memorial Baptist Church (BMBC) was founded and organized on October 1, 1966.  For a brief time, worship services were conducted at the Masonic Temple located on 11th Avenue, Mount Vernon, New York.

The membership began to grow and Rev. Clifton Armstrong was elected as Pastor in 1968.  One of Rev. Armstrong's primary objectives was to initiate a building fund.  The funds were used as a down payment to purchase the property and building located at 66 East 5th Street, Mount Vernon, New York.  BMBC was officially opened at this location on February 4, 1973.  Rev. Armstrong continued to preach the Word of God until his retirement in 1990.

On June 14, 1991, Rev. Hugh Farrish was elected as Pastor of BMBC.  That same Sunday, his wife, Sister Vera Farrish and several other followers of Christ became members.  As people continued to come, hear the word and join in the fellowship, it was evident that a new location was needed to accommodate this growth.  Under the direction of Rev. Farrish, the trustees began looking for properties that would suffice God's House.  The location of 14 North Columbus Avenue was secured on October 1, 1995.  On March 9, 1996, the Lord fulfilled our Pastor's vision and we moved into our new church home.  On this glorious day as we sang and marched from 66 East 5th Street to 14 North Columbus Avenue, we remembered where God had brought us from.  We are truly grateful to God for all of His many blessings.

Wanting our church to be the cornerstone of the community, we opened our doors immediately by inviting our neighbors to worship with us.  We also invited them to fellowship at Friday night family and friends were we play games, socialize and eat food as well as our annual cookouts.   The response from the community was great and many came and still come to worship and fellowship with us.  All ages come out and fellowship in their own way. BMBC is such a family oriented church that we address one another as "brothers" and "sisters" in Christ.

We invite all to come worship with us regardless of race, color or creed.
